Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the most streamed song within six months. It's a blend of reggaeton and pop, which has not only attracted new attention to reggaeton, but an increase in interest in Latin music. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish most of the time, and four more in 2016. When Despacito was at its height, the band's popularity in 2017, 19 tracks primarily composed in Spanish were in at the very top of 100. This figure grew to 41 in 2020. In the wake of Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, many popular artists started to work with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team to record MIA (2018) in addition to Madonna and Maluma worked together on Medellin and Medellin in 2019 By 2020 a few reggaeton stars were complaining about their genre's shift towards the mainstream, but a new generation namely Rauw Alejandro was determined to keep reggaeton evolving. The genre often included elements of electronic dance music as well as other forms.
